Euterpia

Keith Haring, 1987, Marker drawing

This illustration was made by Haring as a label design for Restaurant Euterpia’s house red. The restaurant in Antwerp, Belgium commissioned Haring in 1987, and the label boasts his characteristic pop-art, graffiti style. The joy of the image – the dancing man in the grapes – is a celebration that echoes the joy of a good meal and glass of wine shared among friends. Euterpe, the Greek muse of music from whom the restaurant takes its name, breathes her spirit into the image, as the grapes like beats accompany the man as he jives.
