Repose

John Fox, 1965, Oil on canvas

This impressionistic work is characteristic of Fox’s early style, which was informed by his studies in Europe. The softness of the strokes and light are distinctive, as well as the sense that the reality of the woman is not so important as how colour and lines interplay on the canvas. The scene’s lack of specificity lends it a timeless quality, which is reinforced by the surprising Uranian blue of the vine leaves. Out of time and space, we are transported into one of the artist’s journalistic revelries.
